During the early 1900’s, the Bronzeville District of Milwaukee, WI was a thriving commercial corridor complete with night clubs, restaurants, social centers and businesses, brought together in celebration of African American heritage – highlighting jazz, blues and the arts. However, the construction of freeway I ‐43 in the 1960’s cut directly across the neighborhood, eliminating many buildings, homes and destroying the heart of the community.  Inspired by the economic and social achievements of its early 1900’s roots, the City of Milwaukee initiated The Bronzeville Cultural and Entertainment District redevelopment initiative in hopes to restore, rebuild and beautify the neighborhood. The city dedicated $1.2 million on streetscape enhancements to increase visual attractiveness and to promote a pedestrian friendly environment.  These decorative crosswalks represent the first of many streetscape initiatives to come, designed to generate renewed economic growth, entertainment, arts and culture in the Milwaukee Bronzeville District.
